Focus on Eyes - Minimize Signs of Aging

Posted  on by

The area framing the eyes is typically the first facial area that you focus on when meeting someone for the first time, especially these days, with the wearing of masks. The eye area is also the most delicate area of the face, and if you are past your mid-twenties in age it’s likely you’ve already noticed it’s one of the first areas to show signs of aging.

Wrinkles and Sagging

Charlene DeHaven, M.D. writes in an article, Keeping a Watchful Eye on Aging, “Wrinkles are actually scars that result from repeated inflammation and oxidative damage followed by the body’s attempt to heal.” The skin in the eye area is composed of an entirely different cellular structure than the remainder of the face, therefore it is important to use skincare formulated specifically for this delicate area. Your eye creme or eye gel should contain ingredients such as peptides, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid. “Peptides have been shown to decrease muscle contractions and decrease the appearance of wrinkles”, Dr. DeHaven also noted.

Antioxidants & Sun Protection

Free radicals cause tissue damage which results in premature aging in the eye area.  A good source of protection is applying foundation with SPF, as it may be used under the eye area.  Charisma Skin's  Mineral Foundations and BB Creme all contain physical barrier broad spectrum SPF, and helps provide protection from UV damage for the entire face, including under the eye area.

Wearing sunglasses with good UV protection is also beneficial as it can help prevent free radical damage that can cause sagging and loss of elasticity in the eye area.

The skin is thinner under the eyes, so the blood vessels are closer to the surface, and the bluish color of the vessels can make this area appear darker. Puffiness may occur from inflammation due to allergies or allergic reactions in younger people, or from the “leaking of fluid around the blood vessels in the surrounding tissues”, according to Dr. DeHaven.

Puffiness and Dark Circles

Peptides and antioxidants can both help decrease dark circles.  Charisma Skin’s
Eye and Neck Firming Creme is formulated with a unique blend of corrective ingredients including powerful peptides, antioxidants and sodium hyaluronate to hydrate the skin and help improve dark circles, puffiness and lines and wrinkles. Eyebright Anti-Puffiness Gelee is also a great choice to help specifically with these issues that many people experience in their eye area.

Dehydration

When the skin in the eye area is dehydrated, it’s especially apparent in the texture of the skin, and wrinkles and lines more become more noticeable.

Solutions & Application Tips

See your esthetician regularly for your facials, as professional treatments are especially helpful to keep the skin in the eye area, as well as the entire face, healthy, hydrated and looking radiant!  Be diligent with your skincare regimen at home, both morning and night, and pay extra attention to the eye area. Your regular moisturizer is too heavy for use around the eyes, and can cause sagging before your time!  Be sure to use high quality products with efficacious ingredients like sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) and peptides, as well as antioxidants to help hydrate, repair and protect your skin in the delicate eye area.  Always apply your eye cream or gel using your ring finger (the weakest finger on your hand) and dotting gently from the outer corner to the inner corner underneath your eyes.  Also apply a small amount of eye cream under your orbital bone (underneath your eyebrow).
